Wearing Nail Art to Work

I’ve been debating wearing nail art to work. I don’t have a serious office job, but I still need to be taken seriously at work. I wonder if nail art puts me at a disadvantage sometimes. When I read this article, it gave me hope.

Let me know what you think. Would you consider wearing nail art to work? Do you already? Do you have a creative job where it might be more acceptable, or do you work in a more conventional office setting.

What are your thoughts. I’d love to know.

Dots and Stripes with Zoya Nail Polish

I’ve been wearing a different color of polish every other day for the past several weeks. I’m a huge fan of Zoya Nail Polish, and back in April they had their annual Earth Day promo. I picked up 12 nail polishes for $4 each instead of the regular $8. I loaded up on the new 2013 spring collection, and selected shades from the summer 2013 collections.

I decided to try an easy dot and stripe manicure using all Zoya products. The three major colors are all from the Summer Stunning Collection. Beautiful cream shades that are a dream to paint on, and make my nails just come alive with bright color. I used Josie (green), Darcy (yellow) and Thandie (orange) for this manicure. I also used Zoya’s classic white and black in Purity and Raven for the dots and stripes.

I started with a base coat of Zoya’s Anchor Base Coat, then layered on 2 coats of color for each nail. Once that was dry, I used a striping brush to alternate the white and black stripes on the nails. Then on to the dots. I don’t have a large dotting tool. I realize now that I’ll need to get one. I’ve seen some great prices for dotting tool kits on eBay and Amazon. I used the end of a paint brush for the large dots, and a smallish dotting tool for the smaller inner dots. Then I covered it all with a coat of Zoya’s Armor Top Coat.

All in all, this was a very easy manicure. Everyone who saw it thought it was really difficult. It didn’t take much time at all. I thought my non-dominant hand would make a mess of everything when trying to paint stripes and dots, but it was nearly perfect. I didn’t have to re-do a single finger, and for that I was grateful.

What bright colors are you wearing for Summer? Would you ever wear a busy patterned print like this on your nails? Do you prefer short nails, or longer nails? Let me know in the comments below.

Thanks for reading, and have a great day!

I Heart Nails!

OPI Don't Pretzel My Buttons and OPI Die Another Day

OPI Don’t Pretzel My Buttons and OPI Die Another Day

I was tired of the dark polish I had been wearing for the past several weeks. I’ve  been sporting black, dark blue, jeweled purple, and wine tones. I thought something lighter was in order. This OPI shade in “Don’t Pretzel My Buttons” always makes my fingers look so long. I was also hankering to do some nail art. By the time I started painting my nails last night, it was 10:30, so I didn’t do anything elaborate. I pulled out my dotting tool and grabbed “Die Another Day” from OPI’s Skyfall Collection. Making hearts are so easy.

This manicure will only last until the end of the day tomorrow, but lots of friend saw it today and loved it! It reminds me of Valentines day!

What are you wearing on your nails these days?

Holiday Nails

I’ve been taking a break from polishing my nails. Does 10 days count as a break?  I finally promised myself that It was time to get back in the routine again.

I’m used to changing my polish 3 times a week, and my nails had been paying the toll. They were short, brittle and wouldn’t grow very long. I stopped buffing my nails at every manicure, and stopped using some base coats and top coats that weren’t 3 free. (Good-bye Sally Hansen Hard As Nails Hard As Wraps, and Seche Vite top coat.) I hope that will help. I also need to stop cleaning under my nails with an orange stick several times a day. I find that I get weak points at the edges of my nails where they start to tear.

I decided to take these pictures with the Christmas tree lights in the background. It was just too pretty to pass up. It was my attempt at making it feel more festive.

I wore a very similar look Wednesday until I changed my polish today. (I started wearing polish mid this week after a week and a half break) Here’s a look at it. It also includes a metallic micro glitter from the China Glaze Holiday 2012 Collection. This picture was taken with my phone, and not my Cannon Rebel T3.

It might be time for some honest to goodness nail art. I might have to try my hand at a candy cane stripe, or a Christmas tree design. Maybe just an accent nail or two. I’ll just dangle my toe in the water and see how it goes. If it takes too much effort, I’ll never do it again. If it looks too busy, I’ll never do it again.

Happy Holidays!

What are you wearing on your nails these days? How are you keeping your nails long and strong? I’d love to know. Comment below if you have a moment.

Red Nail Polish . . . What?

I love the color red. I admit it’s my favorite. I have red shoes, red bags, red lipstick, red dresses, red coats and jackets. Red jewelry abounds in my collection. I LOVE red. It’s such a bold color. Every time I wear it, it makes me feel strong. I even have red furniture. I have a small red leather side table, a red toile chair and ottoman, and a vintage style red corded phone in my living room.

Because I have so much red in my wardrobe and accessories, I try and steer away from reds in my nail polish collection. Or so I thought. I took inventory yesterday and realized that I have 15 polishes that would qualify as red/berry toned.

Red Polish Wheel and Nails in Essie Size Matters

I suppose because I love red, I can’t get away from it. Oddly enough, I don’t find that I wear it that often. I just pick up the occasional bottle of red because it’s pretty. I had 3 of these shades before I started painting my nails regularly in November last year. I kept them specifically for pedicures. I would never have thought of wearing them on my hands. Now, I love wearing a bold color on my fingers. Oddly enough, red isn’t always bold enough. I love dark blues, bright yellows, punchy oranges, vibrant greens and shiny metallics.

I think it’s funny that I have 15 shades of red that I will never use  up. I suppose I can always try.

Do you have a overwhelming shade of nail polish in your collection? I’d love to hear about it.

Racing Stripes

I’ve been attempting to create a green racing stripe on my nails for months now. This is the first time I’m willing to post any photos. They’re not perfect, but I am getting better.

I’ve been longing to create some perfect nail art. I know it’s not something that just happens,  but many hours are spent in practice. I’ve only been doing my nails regularly for 10 months, so I still have a lot to learn.

I used China Glaze Exotic Encounters from the Safari Collection as the green base. Sally Hansen Quick Color Nail Pen in black for the large stripe, and Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen in White for the small stripe. I sealed it all with a coat of Seche Vite.

I’ll try it again, but I hope it turns out even better next time. I free-handed the stripes, maybe next  time I’ll tape them. I haven’t had success with tape manicures yet, but that doesn’t mean that I’ll stop trying.

This manicure reminds me of this car.

Fall Foliage Inspired Nails

Orly – Buried Alive and Finger Paints – Flashy

Last week I had a friend ask about Fall colors for nails. She was looking for an orange that would evoke the color of Fall foliage. I only had one orange, and it was more creamsicle than Fall foliage. After her question, I couldn’t think about anything else than nails that looked like Fall leaves.

I didn’t want a literal translation in the nail art department, so I picked up this Orly color at Sally Beauty Supply along with the Finger Paint flake over the weekend during their 70% off sale. I paid $3.50 for both. I wasn’t intending the flake to go over the brown micro glitter, but on a whim, I put it on. I loved the way it caught the light and brought out the orange and yellow in the flake. Along with the gold micro glitter, it just had such a beautiful Fall feel to it.

I tweeted a picture to my friend and she loved it. I do too. I expect I’ll be wearing these two colors quite a bit over the next few months, either separate or together.

Fall Nails

I’ve been addicted to polishing my nails. I can’t seem to stop. In the last month, I’ve picked up over a dozen new fall shades and I’m in nail polish heaven.

I know it’s still warm enough to wear summer shades, but I’ve been wearing dark colors. Blood red, vampy wine tones, navy blue, and army greens. I do have some new fall nudes, but I’m in the mood for dark polish. The darker, the better.

This is one of my new favorites from Zoya. It’s called Evvie. It’s a smokey eucalyptus/army green shade. Beautiful. I love it. I picked it up at ULTA.

Happy fall, and embrace the darker nail colors. You’ll look smashing and chic.

P.S. I just clipped all the length off my nails because I keep accidentally scratching my children.  I’m sad to have short nails again, but it’s nice to know that I won’t poke an eye out trying to hug them.

Sparkly Mani

I had a little extra time on my hands today, and decided to put some extra effort into making my hands look pretty. I love blue polish, and I love dark polish. What could be better than a beautiful shade from Zoya called Ibiza. (I also have a special place in my heart for this shade, because I spend a very fun filled week on the island of Ibiza many moons ago.)

I also used Milani Jewel FX in Gems. It’s a multi colored hexagonal glitter that is just fun in a bottle. I’ve been keeping it on my feet until today because it’s a lot of look for me. I decided that I’d try it out and see what it looked like.

I used a small art brush to apply the glitter since the brush from the bottle was too big, but overall, this manicure was super easy. Base coat, dark polish, and small brush to apply glitter. Wait a few minutes and set with Seche Vite.

I’m hoping the crazy striped maxi dress I’m wearing will bring out the colors of the glitter. Let me know what sorts of manicures you’re sporting these days. I’d love to see a picture.

Midweek Manicure

All three colors are Zoya Nail Polish. Keiko (purple) with accent nail in Wednesday (turquoise) and Purity (white)

I finally removed my zebra print Sally Hansen nail strips on Monday, and painted my nails a muted beige. When I came home from work today I had to liven up my manicure. I felt too ladylike in my nude nails. I felt like I should have been wearing a twin set and pearls.

Over the past 9 months I’ve become a huge fan of Zoya nail color. I love the amazing color selection they offer, and how great their polishes apply. I also love how instead of being 3-free, they’re 5-free. They just don’t put all the yucky stuff in their nail polish.

So if you’re looking for a new shade to add to your collection, check out the Zoya website. You can search through their 300+ colors and find one that’s right for you. If you’re lucky, you might have a local salon that carries Zoya products.

Polish away, and wear some bright colors this summer.
